Speaker: Karen Hale, Associate Director-Human Research Protection Program 

Title: Human Subject Research - Righteous!

Summary:
When is someone a “human subject”? What rights do human subjects have, and who is responsible for protecting those rights? Did you know that there are federal regulations (and University policies) that govern human subjects research? You should know the answers to these questions if you think you might perform or participate in research. Come learn about the history and “mystery” of human subjects research. University resources for researchers and research participants will also be presented.

More about our speaker:
Karen N Hale, RPh, MPH, CIP, is Associate Director, Human Research Protection Program and Clinical Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University (OSU). Ms. Hale is responsible for overseeing education and regulatory support to the IRBs, Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) staff, and the OSU research community. She also provides leadership for quality improvement activities supporting accreditation of the University’s human research protection program. She is a site visitor and served on the Council on Accreditation for the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and is a consultant and site visitor for the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). Ms. Hale was a member of the Standards Revision Committee of the Board of Directors of AAHRPP. She worked in the Department of Pharmacy at the OSU Medical Center and served as Vice-Chair of the Biomedical Sciences Institutional Review Board. She served on the planning committees and as a faculty member for PRIM&R and AAHRPP conferences and as Co-Chair of the PRIM&R 2008 Advancing Ethical Research Conference. She also participated as a faculty member/facilitator in OPRR/FDA human subjects regional conferences. Ms. Hale lectures in the College of Pharmacy and is a reviewer of manuscripts for several medical journals.
