Title:
Hurricane Activity in a Changing Climate

Abstract:
There has been significant debate about whether or not a recent increase in hurricane activity over the Atlantic basin is the result of climate change or reflects natural cycles. The Atlantic hurricane season of 2005 set a number of records. There were 27 tropical storms over the Atlantic basin of which fifteen became hurricanes, seven became major hurricanes and four of the hurricanes reached Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Three of the hurricanes, Katrina, Rita and Wilma, exhibited some of the lowest surface pressures ever observed. This presentation will discuss patterns of hurricane activity, and the potential for changes in hurricane activity under future climate scenarios.
