Stalking a Killer Virus

Across the US and in other developed countries, the top diagnosis at
children’s hospitals year after year is RSV (respiratory syncytial
virus). It causes 100,000 hospitalizations in the US with few deaths,
but in developing countries it kills 160,000 children each year. RSV was
discovered 55 years ago, but the first attempt at vaccination, 10 years
later, went horribly wrong. Since that time, the development of a safe
and effective vaccine has been a top priority, without success. Dr.
Peeples will discuss the basics of viruses, and the history and biology
of RSV. He will also discuss some of the recent discoveries from his
laboratory that may revive hope for an RSV vaccine in the future.

About our Speaker:
|
Mark Peeples leads an
active research laboratory in the Center for Vaccines and Immunity at
Nationwide Children's Hospital. He is a Professor in the Department of
Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and teaches
virology to medical and graduate students. He has trained 15 Ph.D.
students and 18 postdoctoral fellows, as well as numerous undergraduate
and high school students. He is also the current President of the Ohio
State Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Research Honorary.
