Ph.D. Assistantship Available for Spring 2018

 

A Longitudinal Study of Korean Transnational Families’ Sport and Recreation Participation, Acculturation, and Well-being

 

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) at North Carolina State University invites applications for a three-year doctoral assistantship beginning in the Spring 2018 Semester. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. KangJae “Jerry” Lee on a longitudinal study of Korean transnational families’ sport and recreation participation, acculturation, and well-being. This research project is partially supported by the Global Network Program from the National Research Foundation of Korea. The candidate will join an international research team consisting of three faculty and three graduate students from Korea and the U.S. The candidate’s research interests do not need to perfectly align with the project, yet interests in race, ethnicity, immigration, and diversity issues are desirable.

 

Assistantship Package: The assistantship provides an annual stipend of $17,000, tuition, and health insurance. This is one of the most competitive assistantship packages.

 

Key Responsibilities

 Project coordination under the direction of the faculty advisor

 Conduct systematic literature reviews

 Assist with study design, data collection, and analysis

 Contribute to conference presentations, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and other project outputs.

 

Required Qualifications

 The candidate must pursue a Ph.D. degree in the Department of PRTM and maintain good academic standing. It is expected that the student’s dissertation research will focus on some aspects of recreation and sport within transnational families

 Master’s degree (preferably thesis-based) in parks, recreation, sport or tourism, or a related social science discipline

 Background or experience in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed research methods  Strong verbal and writing communication skills

 Strong organizational and project management skills

 Ability to collaboratively work with others

 

Desired Qualifications

 Strong interest in leisure patterns of immigrants

 Proficiency in Korean language
